Subject:Goodnight, Mr. Cronkite
Time:11:07 am
He was how journalism used to be and how I'll always remember it. He had dignity, integrity and intelligence. He was not a sensationalist. That is why he was the man America trusted.

When John F. Kennedy was assassinated, we found out about it by tuning into Mr. Cronkite. It was the first time I'd ever seen a journalist loose his composure. He made me cry and at that young age, his actions let me know that this was an important milestone for our nation.

Walter Cronkite was truly a man to look up to and to aspire to be like, no matter what profession you were in. I think it was also in his approach. He approached everyone with respect and honor. A thing sorely missed in the field now.

Mr. Cronkite, you will be missed.

Subject:Michael - A Genius at Rest
Time:08:06 pm
Current Mood:[mood icon] pensive
A long time ago, my mother took me to a concert in the Coluseium in Houston. I was young enough to be excited and old to be careful not to appear too crazy. Can't say the same about my mother. ^_~

Michael was a part of the Jackson 5 at the time and everyone loved him. Seeing the Jackson 5 in person was like seeing the Beatles for the people a generation above me.
I remember that they were good, the sound was crappy, I had to lean over to see anything because my view was blocked by a pillar, and the one thing I'll NEVER forget...the song, 'I'll Be There' When Michael sang. "Just call my name..." and the crowd yelled out "Michael!" ....my mom was among them... I was mortified.

Over the years, Michael Jackson has risen to iconic status. He has been loved and vilified. The one thing that no one can EVER take away from him was simply this...

He was a damned fine muscian. He was a genius showman...

Rest in Peace Michael.

Music Changes EVERYTHING - WAKE UP!
Current mood: refreshed

I had no particular axes to grind tonight. Just kickin' back. Was thinking about more personal revelations....then I put on some music.

Tonight belongs to Rage Against the Machine - WAKE UP!!!

I first heard the song when The Matrix came out. I'm one of those whacked out drama folks who pays attention to all aspects of a movie. So, me and my pal stuck around for the end credits and grooved to the music.

Didn't have no lyrics, but recognized the words I could catch and was instantly drawn back to the good old, bad old days.

We were so naive. I sat at home and watched the Watergate hearings with my grandma. When the riots hit our town and students at TSU were arrested, I went with my aunt to see about one of her friends and get word on how her brother had fared.

I remember when John F. Kennedy was alive.I remember when Malcolm X was alive. I remember when King was alive.

When Kennedy was assassinated, the heart of America died. Somehow, he was able to cross color lines and get Black people everywhere to rally around him. I was a little girl when he was killed. I felt bad and even ashamed that he was killed in Texas and Dallas has never been the same to me since then.

No one was immune to fear in those days. Everyone felt the terror and tension on a daily basis. We walked on eggshells and prayed that maybe we could get to the next day okay.

We were taught shit like, King was good and Malcolm was bad and militant. Muslims in our neighborhood started off as being these super straight guys with what we considered 'weird' religious ideas. They were always polite and well groomed. That stood for a lot back then. Black kids were taught to dress as nice as you could when going out of your neighborhood, because the eyes of the rest of the nation were on you, judging everything. There was no hope of equality. You weren't an equal, just an other.

When Martin L. King preached non-violence, people listened. They listened equally when Malcolm X spoke the polar opposite. I did get that they were equally correct, it's just that Malcolm's way seemed more dangerous.

And the Black populace trusted neither. To go against authority meant getting beaten at best, dead at worst. There were plenty of examples of both in every family.

I grew up in a secular neighborhood, but my mother didn't confine or consign me to it. She took me out places and it messed up my programming.

I remember when Malcolm X was murdered. It wasn't like it wasn't expected, and I admit I felt a little bit relieved. Maybe we could all still exist under the radar. The saddest thing about Malcolm X dying was that he had made a transformation in his life from following a doctrine of a mortal, to following what was in his experience and in his heart. When I heard that black men had killed him, it blew my mind. I felt ashamed at my feelings about him. I felt stupid. But, I learned.

When Dr. King was assassinated, the bottom dropped out of the world. IT was clear to me then that it didn't matter one iota if you were a peaceful person, if you tried to help people, unnamed people from the shadows could step out and kill you dead anyway.

When Bobby Kennedy got killed, by yet another lone gunman, it signalled the end of the world. Everyone was shocked beyond belief and the United States plunged into depression. For me, the isolation expanded. I could count on nothing.

Years later, in a dark theater I hear this...

"Networks at work, keepin' people calm
Ya know they murdered X
And tried to blame it on Islam
He turned the power to the have-nots
And then came the shot"

(the nudge)

Tonight..."Wake Up!"

Congrats, you know quite a lot about Africa! If you're not a native of the continent, you took a lot of classes about Africa or are just very interested in knowing as much as you can. Either way, you've become quite an expert and could hold your own in a conversation with African natives. Well done!

You want everything in a man at the same time! Masculine, built like a Greek god, exotic and mysterious and even some bad-ass in there too. I think you would really like Freddy Ljungberg, the Swedish soccer player. He's the guy on the right. But let's face it, the whole point of this was to look at a bunch of hot guys. If you liked what you saw, please rate my test!

Hope everyone had a HAPPY TURKEY DAY!!!

Mine started with the tale of 2 Parades...Macy's and H.E.B. (Formerly Foley's) Thanksgiving Day Parade.

I have history with this parade. I worked for Foley's a very long time ago and got tapped to be in the parade on a float. So, I went down on Thanksgiving and nearly froze to death waiting on the parade to start.

Years later and working at the Grindhouse Costume Shop, I got tapped to hand out costumes for the parade.

So, I got up at 4:30 am and froze my butt off getting costumes to over two hundred people. then getting them all back to the shop.

This year, I got up, watched others suffer in the costumes before the parade. Watched both parades flipping from one to the next and then went to mom's for Thanksgiving.

Life is looking up. ^_~

Peace.
